The future of medical science may increasingly force us to develop new understandings of Deuteronomy’s injunction: “I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life” (30:19). In this context, hope will entail the struggle to assure that new technologies are applied with true justice and wisdom. In the world that lies ahead, hope will take on the enormous challenge of proving that Heschel was not correct when he said, “Humanity without death would be arrogance without end.”110

Technological breakthroughs notwithstanding, when it comes to living forever, perhaps there won’t be so many takers. A 2015 poll found that only 14 percent of Americans would choose to do so if they could.111
